FDM rapid prototyping (RP)

Using patented FDM rapid prototyping (RP) processes, Stratasys systems like our Vantage-se machine, create precision 3-dimensional prototyping parts directly from 3D CAD systems. The quickly created, highly accurate parts can be used immediately for testing form, fit and function throughout the design and development process saving a great deal of time, energy, and money in the process.

Such an RP system allows design engineers to model highly complex geometries in high strength ABS or poly carbonate materials, or even a combination – right from their workstation or network, without the complications of chemical post processing, special venting or facility modification... or even a machine operator.

 

 

Materials  
  • The mechanical properties of these materials allow a design team to produce models that can be assembled, tested and even used as production parts; ABS for better flexibility, PC for extra strength, or a combination of the two.
 
Size  
  • Our machine can handle items up to: 40.6cm x 35.5cm x 40.6cm (16 x 14 x 16")
 
Accuracy  
  • models are produced to an accuracy of +/- 0.127mm/mm up to 12.5 cm
  • models larger than 12.5cm have an accuracy of +/- 0.038mm/mm.
 

These rapid prototyped parts are so accurate they can often be used in actual working machines.

FDM  "Fused deposition modeling" explained

(Also known as Rapid Prototyping or 3d-Printing)

FDM is a welding-deploying modelling function. It can be explained by additive layering of construction bricks in melted plastic or other material.

By repetitive adding of layers, the melted plastic will instantly harden when deployed and the model will be built.

Where the 3D model demands it, in example when building the arms to a 3dimmensional T, a supporting wall of deposable material will be built to support the making of the arms, which then is easily removed when complete.
